History Of Sharpsburg Church

The Sharpsburg Church was originally built in 1860. In recent years, the church had been abandoned and vandals were taking their toll on the historic structure. All of the windows and doors had been broken out and the weather was getting in. It wasn't going to be long and the church would have been gone.

In 2005, Porter Camp #2055 approached the owner, O.L. Pennewell, and asked him if we, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, could repair the church and use it as a meeting place. O.L gave us permission to fix the church and use it as the Porter Camp meeting place.

Since that time, Porter Camp has covered all of the broken windows replaced the front door with a new one donated by Robey Building Supply in Monroe City. The camp repainted the walls inside and cleaned the floors. Roy Smith from Hunnewell donated a furnace and installed it for us. Several people have donated chairs for the meetings.

Additionally, Mary Lou Dawson, wife of Porter camp member David Dawson is in the process of completing a wonderful mural on the southern inside wall. When finished, it will be a resplendent painting of a Confederate campsite.

Porter Camp has saved Sharpsburg Church at least for a few years. Yet, the camp has a lot of work left to do in restoring the church. Porter Camp is very honored to have saved a historic church built before the War For Southern Independence. A church, which in most likelihood, Colonel Joseph Porter himself visited during his travels throughout North Missouri.
