Captured February 8, 1866 and kidnapped across the border to Lawrence to stand trial. Was acquitted.

Moved to Nevada, Missouri and worked for the railroad. He then moved to Jefferson City, Missouri and in 1887 worked as a guard at the Missouri State Penitentiary.

According to the February 8, 1901 Lee's Summit Journal, Maddox died on January 4, 1901 and is buried in Jefferson City, Missouri. But the April 5, 1901 issue said he was still alive. Other sources say he died on July 28, 1906.
