US M1855 Cap Box
Stamped "US" on flap. Has soldier's initial's "JPM" carved into flap as well. Manufactured by "Smith & Bourn, Saddler's, Hartford, Conn." on inner flap.

Smith & Bourn made 10,000 sets of .58 & .69 caliber accoutrements for the US in 1862. Has crazing but no flaking. Leather is very soft and pliable.

Neat thing about this box is the field repair made by an innovative soldier. He sewed a replacement finial flap on the box. A tribute to the soldier's ability to adapt and overcome. Nice, war used box.
